The Sycuan Tribal Development Corporation (STDC) is mission-driven to create economic diversification by investing in the long-term financial stability of the Sycuan Tribe and Tribal entities.

The implementation of a broad-based strategy of investing in real estate, hospitality and business ventures dates back more than 20 years to the purchase of Singing Hills Country Club and Resort in 2001. Since the purchase of this resort, Sycuan has further enhanced the Singing Hills brand and established the property as one of the most popular and renowned golf destinations in all of Southern California.

“The Sycuan Tribal Development Corporation represents our long-term commitment to self-determination by expanding our future beyond gaming,” Sycuan Tribal Chairman Cody J. Martinez said. “These investments not only diversify our holdings, but they create a ripple effect throughout the region in terms of job creation, tax generation and providing vital services.”

The Singing Hills purchase was just the beginning. In 2003, STDC partnered on a $36 million project that transformed the National City waterfront by adding the 173-room Marina Gateway Hotel and Conference Center. That same year STDC set its sights on improving San Diego’s downtown by teaming up to bring the 235-room Hotel Solamar to the burgeoning ballpark district and by purchasing the historic U.S. Grant Hotel.

With a guest list that includes Albert Einstein, Charles Lindbergh and fourteen U.S. Presidents among others, The U.S. Grant was built in 1910, on what was originally Kumeyaay land, by the son of President Ulysses S. Grant as a tribute to his father. Sycuan and SDTC partnered with Starwood Group on a $56 million renovation project that resulted in the property being recognized as a Starwood Luxury Collection Hotel and cemented the U.S. Grant as a San Diego icon and a world-wide destination.

Diversification continued with Sycuan Smoke Shop on the Sycuan Reservation, a small shop selling tobacco products manufactured and distributed by sovereign Tribal nations in North America and in 2019, STDC exhibited tremendous growth with its Sycuan Square venture. Featuring a 5,500 square foot convenience store and 1,600 square foot gas station, Sycuan Square offers the lowest gas prices in all of East County and is the only available station for the neighboring communities of Dehesa, Crest and Harbison Canyon. As STDC continues its mission to have a positive impact on and off the reservation, the Sycuan Square location has also been designed to be the site of a new Sycuan Medical and Dental Center which will serve the Dehesa Valley and surrounding communities.

STDC has also played a vital role in strategically purchasing several parcels of land for the purpose of future business development opportunities, Tribal-specific projects, as well as extending the footprint of the Sycuan Reservation.
