The Legal Department of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation represents and advises the Tribal Council and all Tribal governmental entities, including Tribal businesses, departments, boards, commissions, agencies, and subordinate entities, on matters of law affecting the Tribe and its operations.
The General Counsel serves as the Tribe’s chief legal advisor and oversees the Tribe’s legal affairs. Under the direction of the General Counsel, the Legal Department provides strategic legal counsel to Tribal leadership and departments; drafts and reviews contracts, ordinances, resolutions, policies, and other legal documents; and supports the implementation of the Tribe’s governmental and business objectives. The Department also represents the Tribe’s interests before judicial, administrative, and regulatory bodies; manages litigation and dispute resolution matters; supports government affairs and intergovernmental relations; and assists in the enforcement of Tribal laws.
Committed to protecting and advancing Tribal sovereignty, governmental authority, and the Tribe’s long-term strategic interests, the Legal Department works collaboratively across Tribal government and Tribal business enterprises to provide practical, solution-oriented legal counsel that supports effective governance and responsible stewardship of Tribal resources.
